Spring Break on a Carnival Cruise

Written by: Grandma Merle 4/16/2006 12:21:03 PM

APRIL 9-15, 2006

During spring break I went on a week’s cruise with my daughter, Jocelyn, and my grandchildren, Jack and Cassidy. My son-in-law unfortunately had to work while we traveled “solo.” The FUN ship, Liberty, really lived up to its name. The children enjoyed it immensely too.

Cassidy went to Camp Carnival almost every day, at least for a few hours. She loved playing with the other 4 & 5 year olds, face painting and singing, playing games and coloring. Eight year old, Jack, found a friend and they had the full ship to roam on their own. That’s how Jocelyn and I managed to find some quiet time to read or go to the gym and spa. Lot’s of time was also spent around meals…every one a feast. And the children loved all the pools, basketball, ping-pong, gameroom, etc. It’s really great for a family vacation even if it’s only part of a family.

The excursions were wonderful: we swam with the dolphins in Freeport, the stingrays in Cayman and went on a wild dune buggy ride to a pretty white sand beach in Costa Maya, Mexico. There we all body surfed in the waves, built sand castles and played volleyball…or just rocked in the hammock.

We dined in the ship’s fancier restaurant 2 nights (George Blanc's recipes) and it was delish. It was especially wonderful on the night we sent the kids to camp so we could dine in peace and savor our wine and the 3-piece combo entertaining us. Because of Jocelyn’s connections, they comp’d our excursions and the captain brought us a couple of bottles of wine at the last night’s dinner. All in all, it was terrific.

One painful note: I stubbed my baby toe so hard on a heavy patio chaise about an hour before Jocelyn picked me up last Sunday. (I was faithfully watering my plants before leaving them to bake in the sun for a week.) I'm sure I broke the dumb toe, so I limped around all week, wearing only flip-flops! (Good thing I’d brought my flip-flop wardrobe with me) Of course that’s why I couldn’t do anything more vigorous than stretching in the gym!! I’ll save the cardio for when my toe heals. But you know me, Lea, that toe didn't stop my fun!
