Having An "In" When You Travel

Written by: Jesse Keller 8/24/2007 8:32:19 AM
My uncle Antonio was born in Covaleda, a village near Soria in north-central Spain. He married my aunt Tab about thirty years ago, and they settled down in Madrid. And suddenly my family had an “in” to Spanish culture.

You get a whole different experience of a country when you have an “in.”
Tab has become quite the expert on the Prado. She knows all the dirt on Goya’s life, and the history of his paintings. She has lots of great stories. My cousins Bob (aka Roberto) and Marina are native Madrileños, so they show us their favorite spots in Madrid when we’re in town.

And then, of course, there’s Covaleda. It’s a village of a couple thousand people, and they all seem to know my aunt and uncle. My family here in California loves to go visit, and stay at the old family house in Covaleda. October is the best time to go – it’s mushroom hunting season.

Everybody has their secret spots in the surrounding forest where they go to pick the wild mushrooms that spring up at this time of year. Then we all go back to the house, and clean the mushrooms, cook them, and eat, and eat, and eat.

Of course, I recommend Spain to anybody – the food, the culture, and the history just can’t be beat. But I also recommend finding a travel destination where you have an “in,” wherever it might be.
